Wirral Waters’ flagship residential development Millers Quay wins top Uk design award.

Costing £130m and completed in 2024, Millers Quay comprises 500 one- and two-bedroom apartments for rent across six high-rise buildings. 100 of the apartments are classed as affordable (rents no more than 80% of local market rate).

Designed by architects at Howells the scheme has been awarded the Completed Scheme Award at the 2025 Housing Design Awards (HDA) — one of the UK’s most respected accolades for housing.

Richard Mawdsley, director of development at Wirral Waters, said: “Millers Quay was always about creating a new picture postcard for Wirral, homes that celebrate our heritage whilst creating a great place for our residents.

“The team at Howells understood our vision and masterplan from the start and have worked in partnership with us from initial design concepts right through to the completion of this amazing development.

“Huge credit to the whole team but especially to urban designers Parkinson Inc, contractor Graham, our funding partners Pension Insurance Corporation, and of course to Wirral Council.”

Alan McCartney, partner at Howells, added: “As the first residential phase of the Wirral Waters regeneration masterplan, these new homes show what’s possible when visionary public–private partnerships — including Homes England, Peel, Wirral Council and PIC — come together to deliver real, lasting change.

“The architecture of Millers Quay combines colour, confidence and scale with thoughtful detailing throughout the well-designed homes, all which feature waterside views, well-composed façades and high-quality materials.”
