A defence industry start-up tech business says it will create 50 new jobs thanks to the take-off of its battlefield technology that has impressed NATO chiefs. Tony McDonough reports
A tech start-up focused on the defence sector is to create 50 new jobs to meet demand for its battlefield platform that has caught the eye of NATO.
Verde Spaces is based at The Base, a small business tech hub in Dallam Lane in Warrington. It has developed a piece of technology, a command post platform, that can be deployed on the battlefield within 15 minutes.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has forced Western countries, including the UK, to take a hard look at their defence capabilities. This is likely to lead to an increase in defence spending with a particular focus on new technology.
Verde Spaces was invited to showcase its command post platform by HQ Allied Rapid Reaction Corps (ARRC) – part of NATO – at the ARRC’s Innovation Day. More than 65 members of NATO were shown the product, which is capable of replacing multiple disparate systems.
It has the potential to significantly transform how NATO deploys and operates on the battlefield of the future. The first unit is now operational and is being tested by potential end users, having been produced in Appleton in Warrington.

Verde Spaces managing director Neil Rustage said: “Our team has demonstrated that UK sovereign capability exists and, along with vastly experienced industry experts, it is possible to engineer and manufacture an incredibly complex systems platform incorporating different technologies from multiple disciplines.
“We are launching a product that reduces the need for multiple, non-compatible systems for the end-user. We are delighted to have been part of the innovation being undertaken at ARRC NATO and look forward to working further with them as well as our many other clients and partners across the industry.
Mr Rustage says fifty new jobs will be created by the company over the next five years to meet demand. Working capital is being provided by the firm’s shareholders. The business is also being supported by Warrington South MP Andy Carter and Warrington Chamber of Commerce.
The Base is a 50,000 sq ft grade A office building owned by Warrington & Co, the town’s public-private regeneration agency. Its focus is on nurturing high-growth digital and engineering businesses such as Verde Spaces. More than 25 companies employ almost 250 staff in the building, which is managed by Langtree.
Steve Park, director of Growth at Warrington Council, added: “Warrington’s economic success is built on a strong legacy of manufacturing, especially in steel fabrication and specifically wire.
“It is encouraging to see that Verde Spaces are continuing this heritage, utilising world class engineering skills to launch a unique solution that can be sold overseas. Warrington Council is delighted to be supporting Verde Spaces with its exciting expansion programme.”
