BBC Radio Merseyside presenter, musician and entertainer, Billy Hui, is named as the new incoming High Sheriff of Merseyside. Tony McDonough reports

BBC Radio Merseyside presenter and entertainer Billy Hui will is to be the new High Sheriff of Merseyside for 2025/26.
Wirral-born Billy, who is also behind the multi-award winning choir SingMe Merseyside, is currently the Deputy Lieutenant of Merseyside. In the new role he will take over from Professor John Mohin who has held the position for the past 12 months.
High Sheriffs are the King’s representatives in each of the counties of England and Wales. It is a year-long ceremonial post and each Merseyside High Sheriff is chosen by the King.
The so-called ‘Pricking of The Lites’ ceremony took place on March 12 at 4pm and he was informed an hour later that King Charles III had pierced Billy’s name on the document listing his details with the bodkin of Queen Elizabeth I according to tradition and protocol.
Billy says he will continue his work within the entertainment industry at the BBC and SingMe Merseyside. And he said he is very much looking forward to further supporting a wide range of local charities, voluntary organisations and communities as High Sheriff.
His focus in the coming year will be on arts, creative and cultural industries including Merseyside venues and hubs plus Chinatown and the Chinese community.
Commissioned as a Deputy Lieutenant of Merseyside in November 2023, Billy was the recipient of the British Empire Medal from the late Queen Elizabeth II for services to the people of Merseyside.

He is also patron of the Stick ’n’ Step Charity and ambassador for Arrowe Park and Clatterbridge Hospitals Charity, Amy & Friends Charity, Wirral Globe Arts Ambassador plus Wirral Life Magazine’s Silver Awards Winner for Outstanding Contributions to Arts.
Billy’s partner Kerry, who will be his consort for the High Sheriff year and both are excited for this opportunity to “further support, highlight and praise the wonderful people and communities based in Merseyside”.

“It will provide me with an exceptional platform to continue my work with local charities, communities and the people of Merseyside
“I’m also looking forward to highlighting the cultural, creative and arts sectors in our local area plus Chinatown and the Chinese community.”
