A Wirral-based accountancy practice has launched what they say is a ‘first-of-its-kind’ paid training scheme, designed to nurture future talent in the sector. Tony McDonough reports.

The Accountancy Partnership (TAP), who are based in Birkenhead, has opened recruitment for its Junior Accountant Programme as part of its commitment to creating jobs in the area.

Over the last couple of years there have been numerous press reports of multiple UK business sectors struggling to recruit the right people.

The 12-month course will provide trainees with ‘fast-track immersive training’ in every aspect of accounting by the company’s senior accountants, including management of their own portfolio of clients.

There will also be a sharp focus on the application of digital accounting software.

Kevin Markham enrolled on the course after spending 22 years in the RAF. He said: “My friends and family couldn’t believe that I was going into an office job and working in accountancy.

“I have my own assigned clients and they’ll ring directly for consultations. I’ve been working on accounts with my mentor, Dean, and there’s a sense of achievement when everything is to his satisfaction.”

Former chef Ben Warren added: “The course is very comprehensive. The structure and quality of the training is so good, learning about a subject I had no knowledge in at the beginning doesn’t feel overwhelming.”

The programme offers a starting salary of up to £30,000 with an earning potential of £50K for its graduates. There are limited spaces left for the next cohort, starting on September 1. Two more programmes are planned for February and May 2024.

Managing director at TAP, Lee Murphy, has pledged to pay for industry-recognised qualifications for any trainees’ interested in extending their learning.

He said: “We’re hoping to find some of the brightest minds from Wirral who will join us in supporting small businesses and entrepreneurs based around the UK.

“The trainees for our Junior Accountant Programme will become part of a fast-paced sector and a company that values their skills and well-being while delivering an outstanding service at the forefront of progressive accounting.

“Our trainees, whether they’re leaving education or ready for a career change, will be a new generation of digital-savvy accountants well-equipped to support modern businesses.”
