The campaign to bring a Business Improvement District (BID) to Birkenhead is being backed by local manufacturer AEV.
Wirral Chamber and Wirral Council are pushing the BID plan to provide funding and investments, which they claim the area needs.
AEV is one of the UK’s largest manufacturers of electrical varnishes and resins as well as a major exporter.
Managing director, Jonathan Kemp, said:
“AEV is a proud and long-standing Birkenhead business yet we have witnessed first hand how the lack of investment has resulted in a steady decline of the town centre.
“We recognise how a safe, clean and well-resourced town centre can bring benefit not only to our business, staff and customers but also to the wider business community.
“We therefore pledge our support for Wirral Chamber of Commerce and a Birkenhead Business Improvement District.“
BIDs operate in towns and cities across the world; businesses within the designated area pay an extra levy on top of their business rates and this funds projects. These projects can include safety and security, environmental improvements or marketing and promotion.
Carl Critchlow, BID co-Ordinator for Wirral Chamber, added:
“ One of the biggest advantages of a BID is the broad range of initiatives it can be used to fund.
“This means that every business sector, whether it be industrial, professional or retail will benefit in some way. The support of an industry leading business such as AEV demonstrates a real vote of confidence in a Birkenhead BID.”
