New £13m contract sees Merseyside brake disc maker Surface Transforms supply its products to an automotive manufacturer for an electric vehicle. Tony McDonough reports
Supercar brake disc maker Surface Transforms (ST) has secured a £13m contract to supply its carbon ceramic brake disc to be fitted to an electric vehicle.
Due to start in early 2024, the deal with the unnamed automotive manufacturer will last for five years. ST will be the sole supplier of the carbon ceramic brake disc on both axles of a new variant of an existing model.
ST makes brake discs for a number of high performance cars. Customers have also included Porsche, Ferrari and Nissan. It also supplies brake discs for the Aston Martin Valkyrie which retails at £3m.
During the past year ST, which is listed on the stock exchange’s Alternative Investment Market, has secured contracts with a number of major automotive manufacturers. In March it won its biggest deal to date worth £100m, taking its total order book to £180m. In July it reported a 240% rise in annual sales.
Kevin Johnson, chief executive of ST, said: “This most welcome award, our sixth contracted OEM, is the culmination of several years of engineering activity.
“The contract was won due to our product’s technical superiority in exacting head-to-head trials. We are in discussions with (this manufacturer) on additional opportunities and hope to make further announcements in due course.”
