City of Liverpool College students help keep Titanic Hotel afloat with major regional regeneration award

The Titanic Hotel has informed property industry leaders that The City of Liverpool College played a key role in its success after receiving a prestigious award for regeneration.

At the 2014 Your Move Property Awards, the recently opened hotel on Stanley Dock won the Regeneration category and gave credit to the College and its students for their significant contribution.

The partnership between the hotel and the College sees students in a number of sectors building experience and gaining vocational qualifications.

Student bakers who hone their skills in the College’s Bread and More shop are now creating fresh, bespoke bread for the Titanic’s guests and before the hotel opened, the college acted as a training centre for Titanic employees to learn bar skills like mixology, plus kitchen and silver service skills.

Students were also given the opportunity to learn the skills needed to deliver housekeeping services in high-standard hotels – often the first rung for those looking for a career in the industry – and received training in order to fill casual work vacancies to gain extra work experience.

College Principal Elaine Bowker said she was proud of the contribution college students had made to quickly establishing the Titanic Hotel as one of the best venues in the city:

“The Titanic Hotel richly deserves this award. Harcourt Developments have made a significant investment in regenerating the Stanley Dock area and we are very proud of the contribution our students have made to its success.

“Our partnership with the Titanic Hotel is a perfect example of how businesses and colleges can work together to increase skills in the regional workforce while strengthening the regional economy. By building this relationship we are able to offer our students valuable work experience and high quality vocational qualifications across a range of careers.

“Skills are what will fuel the engine of economic growth in Liverpool City Region and nationally. We are helping bridge the gap between the demand for specific skills in the growing visitor economy and the availability of those skills in the workforce.

“By ensuring that people here in Liverpool have the right skills and experience, we are providing a well-equipped local workforce. This makes it easier for businesses to recruit from within the region rather than looking outside which encourages growth. That means more jobs for people from Merseyside, in Merseyside and that will help the city region economy thrive.”
