Merseyside cancer support charity, Liverpool Sunflowers is inviting members of the local community to get a healthy new start to their New Year, by joining up for one of their free weekly activity classes.
The charity, which provides support to anyone in Merseyside affected by a cancer diagnosis, runs a range of free, weekly activity groups and classes to help improve both the physical health and emotional wellbeing of local people.
All of the groups take place on a weekly basis at the Liverpool Sunflowers Centre on Aigburth Road, and are suitable for all abilities, including beginners.
Joan Elmer, Chief Executive of Liverpool Sunflowers explains:
“At Liverpool Sunflowers we offer a range of weekly activity groups that are free to access, and aim to offer support not only to those living with a cancer diagnosis, but also their spouses, wider family members, friends and supporters.
“Taking part in an activity group can be a great chance to meet new people, develop new skills and find a healthier, more positive outlook on life, whatever circumstances or health challenges you may be facing.“The New Year is a great time to try taking up something new – so why not join us for one of these sessions and see what benefit they can be?”
Free activity groups currently on offer at the Sunflowers Centre include:
Weekly Art Therapy Class – Runs Wednesday mornings (10.30am – 12.30)
Art is an amazing outlet for emotions and creativity and this class is a great way to learn a new skill and produce something beautiful or interesting. Discover the basics and apply them to your own work to develop a piece that would look perfect on your own wall.
Weekly Crafts Class – Runs Tuesday afternoons between (2.00 – 4.00pm)
Try your hand at card making, glass painting, sewing and lots more. Even if you haven’t had a go before, there is always someone there to help. All the tools and materials will be ready for you to get creative.
Weekly Tai Chi Class – Runs Thursday mornings (11.00am -12.00pm)
Local expert Joyce Hughes teaches the basics of Tai Chi and helps all abilities to discover the relaxation and strength that can be learned from this ancient art.
In addition, the charity is also appealing to anyone who would like to partner with Liverpool Sunflowers in introducing new classes into their offering for 2015.
Joan adds:
“In the past, we’ve run all sorts of interest groups such as cookery and baking classes, music lessons and singing courses, creative writing groups, drama groups, IT skills classes, and much more besides – however we need volunteers to help us run them.”
“We can provide free venue space and all of the promotion and support to help get new groups established – we are just looking for willing volunteers with a talent for something, and a passion for sharing it with others, to help us run the sessions.”
“So if you are interested in taking part in any of the current courses on offer, or in helping to run or take part in a new course, we’d love to hear from you.”
