Community Art Exhibition to feature work of local cancer survivors

The Merseyside cancer support charity, Liverpool Sunflowers is hosting a very special art exhibition at The Reader Gallery in the Coach House at Calderstones Park.

Taking place from Tuesday 4th – Sunday 9th November, the exhibition will be a unique showcase of paintings created by local individuals living with cancer who have used their artwork as an outlet for emotion and creativity.

All of the work displayed in the exhibition was produced as part of a weekly art therapy group run by Liverpool Sunflowers, and many of the original pieces will also be available for purchase with all proceeds being reinvested back into the charity’s work.

In addition, a series of unique, hand-made Christmas cards featuring artwork from the collection and the first Liverpool Sunflowers Art Calendar will also be available to buy at the exhibition, providing some perfect Christmas present ideas, all in aid of a good cause.

The exhibition will be open to members of the public daily between 10:00am – 4:00pm.

Joan Elmer, Chief Executive for Liverpool Sunflowers and a cancer survivor herself explains:

“All of the art being featured in this exhibition was created as part of a weekly art therapy group hosted by Liverpool Sunflowers, so this exhibition is a unique opportunity to be inspired by some beautiful and thought-provoking paintings from local artists who have been battling a cancer diagnosis, and a chance to help raise vital fund for our cancer charity at the same time.

“At Liverpool Sunflowers we provide a wide range of support groups and activity classes which help stimulate the body and mind, because we find that maintaining a positive mental state helps to support the recovery process for those battling cancer.

“Many of our service users have found art to be an amazing outlet for expressing how they feel about their illness. Our art therapy classes have proved incredibly popular, so we are really excited to be able to share some of the fantastic artwork produced in it with the wider community. Please do come and see it if you can.”

The Liverpool Sunflowers Art Therapy Class is held every Wednesday at the Sunflowers Centre on Aigburth Road between 10.30am – 1.30pm. It is free to access and anyone who has been affected by cancer is welcome to attend, including those with a current diagnosis, cancer survivors, family members, partners and friends.
