Developer Anwyl Homes is getting ready to release the first of 127 new Wirral homes to prospective buyers.

Anwyl is about to start construction work on the development in Bebington on land formerly occupied by the research and development division of consumer products giant Unilever. It sold the nine-acre plot to Anwyl in October 2024.

Unilever first put the land up for sale in 2020. It forms part of the company’s R&D facility on Quarry Road East which is separated from its Port Sunlight factory complex by a road and a railway line. Hundreds of scientists and support staff are employed at the site.

Other buildings in the complex, including the Manufacturing Technology Centre and the recently built Advanced Manufacturing Centre, are not affected by the sale. Unilever will use proceeds from the sale to reinvest in the facilities.

Offering a range of one to four-bedroom homes, the development will be called Lottie Gardens in honour of Bebington-born sportswoman Charlotte ‘Lottie’ Dod (1871 to 1960) a celebrated five-time Wimbledon tennis champion, Olympic silver medal-winning archer and national golf champion.

Demolition of the Unilever buildings was completed earlier this year and as the building of the homes begins Anwyl is holding a special event for househunters on Saturday, September 6, from 10am to 5.30pm.

A new on-site sales office will open to give prospective buyers the chance to learn more about the new homes. Guests will be welcomed with complimentary drinks and cupcakes. They can also meet the team behind the scheme.

Prices for the first homes will be revealed prior to the launch, giving visitors the earliest opportunity to reserve their new home. Each property will benefit from private gardens and off-road parking.

A woodland will be retained and linked by a new footpath to St Andrews Road. Anwyl will also contribute £677,000 as part of the planning agreement, supporting local parks, sports pitches, biodiversity improvements, and transport infrastructure.

Thomas Bradley, senior sales manager at Anwyl, said: “We’re excited to be welcoming prospective purchasers to Lottie Gardens, which is located in such a desirable part of the Wirral. We’re creating much-needed new homes on a site with a rich history locally.
