Contractors working on Everton’s £500m stadium on Liverpool waterfront install first concrete terracing. Tony McDonough reports
Construction of Everton FC’s £500m stadium on Liverpool waterfront has reached a major milestone with the installation of the first concrete terracing.
Mian contractor Laing O’Rourke started work on the arena at Bramley-Moore Dock in Liverpool Waters in summer 2021. Now the company has confirmed work is complete on building the four concrete cores to their full height.
This double milestone was achieved 12 months to the day since a project started. Everton chairman Bill Kenwright, chief executive Denise Barrett-Baxendale and former Players’ Life President Graeme Sharp, all attended the groundbreaking ceremony.
Now the first of 1,217 terracing units, which will form the internal bowl lining, has been lifted and bolted into place in the lower tier of the north stand. These bespoke, double-stepped terracing units were manufactured in Ireland by Banagher. They were delivered by boat to Liverpool docks, a short distance from the project site.
Director of stadium development, Colin Chong said: “Terracing units going on the steelwork represent a major visual change in the build. As the terracing installation progresses in a logical sequence, the structure looks more like a football stadium with every day that passes.”
The ‘topping off’ of the four concrete cores means they are now complete units, ready to support secondary steelwork and, ultimately, the roof trusses. Work continues across all four stands at Everton Stadium. Two steelwork sections on the north stand are edging closer to connecting.

The first precast concrete walls that will make up the first floor have been installed in the east stand. The entire first floor is also close to completion in the opposite west stand.
And the south stand steelwork is now connected to the structural concrete core in the south west. Additional steelwork also emerging in the south east corner.
Everton Stadium, due for completion in the 2024/25 season, is recognised as the largest single-site private sector development in the country. It is estimated it will contribute an estimated £1.3bn to the UK economy. It will also create thousands of jobs and attract 1.4m visitors to Liverpool every year.
