Bike & Go offers bike hire facilities at 21 stations across the Merseyrail network

Subscribers to bike hire scheme Bike & Go are will be able to claim a free regular Costa coffee and a cake to mark Cycle to Work Day this Wednesday, August 15.

Those registered to the scheme in the Merseyside area can claim their hot drink and choose from a flapjack, lemon drizzle, cookie or chocolate slice simply by showing their Bike & Go card to staff at their nearest Mtogo convenience store.

The participating outlets are Hamilton Square, Hooton, Liverpool South Parkway, Lime Street Underground, Liverpool Central, Maghull, Moorfields, Moorfields Old Hall Street and Southport.

Cycle to Work Day is the UK’s biggest cycle commuting event, and sees thousands of enthusiastic riders hit the streets each year to celebrate everyday cycling.

Suzanne Grant, Bike & Go director, said: “From being a greener way to travel, to boosting your own mental and physical health, there are so many reasons why it’s great to cycle to work.

On Cycle to Work Day, we want to encourage those registered to the scheme to join other supporters of the event in experiencing the benefits that cycling has to offer, and what better way than by rewarding them with coffee and a cake.”

Research has shown that cycling to work can make a huge difference to people’s health and wellbeing, with David Spiegelhalter, the Winton Professor of Risk at Cambridge University, estimating that, on average, every hour we spend cycling adds an hour to our lives.

It can also cut the risk of cancer and heart disease according to a major study released last year, which found that cycling regularly reduced incidences of cancer by 45% and heart disease by 46%.

And those looking to shed the pounds will be delighted to learn that the average person loses 14lbs in their first year of cycling to work.

To hire a Bike & Go bike, users need to register their card details online, which they can do via smart phones, tablets, or at home, and pay the annual £10 subscription fee.

They will then receive a user number via email which will allow immediate bike hire – usually charged at just £3.80 per 24 hours up to a maximum of 72 hours – while they wait for their Bike & Go membership card.
