Graphic designers Bolland & Lowe team up with Professional Liverpool to ‘get their cake on’

‘Get Your Cake On’ was recently staged in aid of Ronald McDonald House, The House that Love Built. Andrew Wright reports.
Cotton Exchange-based graphic designers Bolland & Lowe recently teamed up with Professional Liverpool to host a ‘Cake Off’ in the Cotton Exchange on Old Hall Street.
Hosted on Valentine’s Day, contestants were asked to bake a cake with the brief of ‘what love tastes like on a plate’.

14 contestants entered the competition, which was judged by writer and columnist Jade Wright, and Chef  Sean Paul.

They were judged on creativity, appearance and taste. The judges’ overall winner was Glenys Underwood, who baked a flourless chocolate orange cake.
Runners up prizes went to Ann Clark, who entered on behalf of the Liverpool Organic Brewery with a chocolate stout cake, and John Lowe, who baked a peanut butter, chocolate and pretzel cheesecake.

There was also a people’s vote on the day, which was won by Rachel Brooks from Concept 22 with her  ‘Valentines drip cake.’

John Lowe, managing director at Bolland & Lowe, said: “We decided to host this event to raise awareness to Ronald McDonald House as this is an independent charity in Liverpool supporting parents at a time when they need it most when their children are seriously ill. Valentines Day for us is the perfect day to celebrate and raise money for ‘The House that Love built’.”

The event raised £400 for Ronald McDonald House.

Gill Willson, Head of Fundraising from Ronald Mc Donald House: “We were delighted to have this event in our support as it raises the charities awareness in the commercial sector and helps us to share the love we have at the house. We are delighted to receive £400, it will really make a difference.”

Alex Clark, Operations Manager at Professional Liverpool, added: “Professional Liverpool and our members were delighted to support this event for such a good cause. It was also great to see such an amazing turnout and the baking talent in the City.”
