A subsidiary of Liverpool affordable housing provider Torus, construction business HMS has taken on a new cohort of 26 apprentices in Merseyside and Cheshire. Tony McDonough reports
Construction and maintenance contractor HMS has taken on 26 new apprentices across its operations in Liverpool city region and Cheshire.
HMS is a subsidiary of Liverpool-based affordable housing provider Torus. It turns over around £80m a year and invests 100% of its profits into social outcomes that contribute to the growth and development of community projects in Merseyside and Cheshire.
Each year, HMS aims to invest £5m into meaningful projects across the North West, which work to improve wellbeing, skills and quality of life, to break down barriers and unlock potential.
It takes on two cohorts of trade and business apprentices each year, with successful applicants joining the business in March and September. Now it has given training opportunities to 26 young people in the latest cohort.
HMS has a number of former apprentices now in managerial and leadership roles, including managing director, Paul Worthington. He said: “Since starting HMS in 2011, apprenticeships have been integral to the business’ success and it’s been fantastic to see people work their way up the ranks.
“Apprenticeships are a part of our DNA as a company and since COVID-19 hit, it’s more important than ever to ensure that these opportunities remain available to young people across our communities, which is what we are doing and continue to do.
The business carries out more than of 100,000 repairs and 2,500 vacant property refurbishments per year. And, with its development plan growing, it aims to build more than 200 housing units per year.
Torus Group is one of the North West’s largest landlords and has more than 1,500 members of staff and manages over 40,000 homes serving 75,000 customers.
