Hollyoaks stars Nikki Sanderson and James Sutton, TV presenter Craig Phillips and Merseyside MP’s Andy Burnham, Steve Rotheram and Luciana Berger prepare for to take on this years Tri Liverpool, Triathalon event, joining world no 1 ranked female Triathlon Champion Gwen Jorgenson (pictured) and thousands of participants at Liverpool’s breathtaking docklands this Sunday as part of the British Triathlon championship series.
Tri Liverpool
Based in the heart of the Liverpool Docks, Tri Liverpool is arguably the most spectacular city-based triathlon in the UK.
This Sunday, August 10th, over 1,000 triathletes will swim in the Queens and Wapping Docks, cycle past the Liver Buildings and run across the waterfront before crossing the finish line outside the impressive Echo Arena to collect their hard-earned medal.
Unlike many running and cycling events, triathlon is an extremely spectator friendly sport as you get to see the same athlete many times throughout the course of their race.
The event, organised in partnership by Lagardere Events Unlimited and British Triathlon and supported by Liverpool City Council, will attract a stellar elite field, world champion Gwen Jorgensen, last year’s winner Brendan Sexton and current U23 ETU Triathlon European Champion, Gordon Benson all lining up on the start line in the women’s and men’s races respectively. The elite races are also the finale of the 2014 British Triathlon Super Series.
The thousands of triathletes, including some of the world’s best, will be taking part in Tri Liverpool this Sunday starting at 7am with competitors taking part throughout the day.
The races
The female and male elite races will start at 3pm and 5pm respectively and, with some stellar names in the line-up, thrilling racing is guaranteed. Organisers are calling on the people of Liverpool to come out and support competitors, many of whom will be taking part in their first ever triathlon.
In the female elite race at 3pm, world no1 female triathlete Gwen Jorgensen will be taking on a strong field in what is certain to be a hugely competitive race. With a raft of talent also in the men’s race, including last year’s winner Brendan Sexton and current ETU U23 Triathlon European Champion Gordon Benson, spectators are guaranteed a day of high octane triathlon action. The event is also the finale of the British Triathlon Super Series.
Gwen, who is currently the world’s top ranked female triathlete, has expressed her excitement at competing at Tri Liverpool this year, stating:
“I’ve heard that it’s a beautiful city and that the event has a really fast and exciting course. It comes at a great time in my training cycle and I’m really looking forward to racing hard and taking the momentum into the ITU World Triathlon Series race in Edmonton later on in August.”
Assistant Mayor, Councillor Wendy Simon, said:
“Following months of careful planning, we’re delighted that Tri Liverpool is finally here. We are sure the people of Liverpool will be out in force to show competitors their support and watch the elite races later on in the afternoon. It’s going to be a fantastic day and we hope the next generation will be inspired by the feats of all the amazing sportsmen and women taking part.”
