One of Liverpool’s much-loved music and food hideaways is hosting an afternoon of sun, beats and BBQs to help raise money for the North West Cancer Research charity.
Kazimier Gardens will host the ‘Garden get Down’ on Saturday 16th July, bringing together the very best in funk, soul, jazz, afrobeat and Latin music, all in one glorious garden setting to raise awareness and funds for cancer research.
The event kicks off from 2pm and will feature sets from local talent including: No FaKin Djs, Mixnots, Pooky, Danny FitzGerald, Radio Exotica, Chris McBride, Elliot Hutchinson and a special set from event organiser Andy James.
Food will be available from The Kazimier Kitchen, which will serve up lamb burgers, slow cooked pork baguettes, veggie burgers, spiced chicken and rice and halloumi and falafel flatbreads for party-goers to enjoy.
A special ‘Gin n Juice’ cocktail has been created by the Kazimier team to mark the occasion and £2 from every drink sold will be donated to chosen charity North West Cancer Research.
As well as raising funds, North West Cancer Research will also invite people to take part in its #suncreamselfie campaign, encouraging people to stay safe in the sun and reduce their risk of getting skin cancer.
Organiser Andy James said:
“We can’t promise that it’s going to be sunny, but we can promise an afternoon of great music, good food and brilliant atmosphere – all for a good cause.
“North West Cancer Research is a fantastic local charity based in Liverpool so it is great we are able to do something to help them and bring attention to the lifesaving cancer research they fund here in the city.”
North West Cancer Research is the biggest independent locally-based funder of cancer research in Liverpool. It has committed to funding more than £12.3million worth of research over the next five years – £8.1million of which will be based at the University of Liverpool.
Money raised by the ‘Garden Get Down’ will go on to support research such as a three year project looking at the role of the HPV virus in head and neck cancers and a clinical trial which will help improve the treatment of bile duct cancer.
It will also help fund the next generation of research scientists. North West Cancer Research currently funds 16 PhD studentships at the University of Liverpool as well as seven intercalating students who will begin their placements in August this year.
Bobby Magee, fundraising manager at North West Cancer Research, said:
“Thanks to the guys at Kazimier Gardens, to Andy and to the super talented musicians, who are all giving up their time to make the ‘Garden Get Down’ happen.
“It should be a really fun day and we can guarantee there will be something for all the family to get down and boogie to.
“We want everyone to get involved with our #suncreamselfie campaign on the day, to help raise awareness of sun safety and skin cancer. We’ll be encouraging people to cover up and pop the sun cream on if the sun is out – remember you only have to be burnt once to be at risk of getting skin cancer.”
The ‘Garden Get Down’ will take place on Saturday 16th July at Kazimier Gardens (entrance on Seel Street) from 2pm till midnight. Entry is free. More information can be found at www.nwcr.org or by contacting bobby@nwcr.org
