Liverpool bells to ring out in memory of the 96 Hillsborough victims

Liverpool Town Hall have today lowered the flags to half mast the bell will toll 96 times at 15:06,  in remembrance of those who died in the Hillsborough disaster, 26 years ago.

The city will unite at the moment the match was halted to pay respects to the victims and families of the tragedy, which claimed the lives of 96 Liverpool FC supporters.

The media wall at Lime Street station will show images of the victims, and a memorial service marking the anniversary of the disaster will be held at Anfield stadium. Actress Sue Johnston, who has been a life-long fan of the club and an ambassador of the families who have continually fought for justice, will speak at the event.

Flags on all civic buildings will fly at half mast for the entire day, the Mersey Ferry will sound its horn and barriers at the Mersey tunnels will be lowered to observe the anniversary.

Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson said:

“We will never forget those who died at Hillsborough, and this is a day for us to unite as a city and remember each one and also their families and friends left behind.”

The new inquests into the deaths of the 96 Liverpool fans will resume on 20 April at Birchwood Park, Warrington.

The inquests started in March 2014 and are expected to continue until early 2016.
