Liverpool ‘cleantech’ recruiter opens US base

Founded in Liverpool by David Hunt, Hyperion Executive Search specialises in finding talent for clients in the cleantech sector and is to launch a North American operation. Tony McDonough reports

Liverpool ‘cleantech’ recruitment firm Hyperion Executive Search is stepping up its international expansion by opening a new office in the US.

Hyperion, which is based in Liverpool Innovation Park close to Edge Lane, specialises in finding talented individuals for businesses in the clean energy, future mobility and and smart cities sectors. It is focused on executive, senior and strategically important hires.

Awareness around climate change and a growing sense of urgency in the business world to accelerate the push towards decarbonisation and sustainability, has led to a rapid growth in cleantech industries.

Founded by chief executive David Hunt in 2014, Hyperion has benefited from that growth. It currently employs 12 people in Liverpool and Germany. It has now opened an office in the US city of Jacksonville, initially employing two people. This will grow to up to six by the end of the year with the company as a whole taking its headcount beyond 20.

The firm has already established a reputation in the US and has worked with a string of North American companies, including a number of ventures backed by Bill Gates’ Breakthrough Energy Ventures organisation.

Its clients include high-growth start-ups and scale-ups, and the VC and PE firms that fund them. David said: “The US has long been a leader in the nascent cleantech sector, and not just Silicon Valley. The urgency for innovative climate change solutions has driven exponential growth in this sector creating huge demand for talented staff.

“According to a report by PwC, cleantech has experienced rapid growth in investment over the last decade, rising more than 3,750% in just seven years. As more and more innovative cleantech companies launch, relocate, or expand in the area, the more talent is needed to drive their ambitions forward.

“According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the clean energy sector is currently the largest job creator within the US energy sector. We already know there is significant demand for our expertise and services.”

Heading up the Hyperion operations in North America will be Robert Olson, who offer a number of years of US recruitment experience to the role, having worked for over a decade in cleantech and tech recruitment covering markets across the country.
