Liverpool city region business leaders travel to Westminster for a high level Parliamentary reception organised by Downtown in Business
Business leaders, parliamentarians, local government representatives and key stakeholders came together in Westminster this week for a Liverpool city region Parliamentary reception.
Hosted by business lobby group Downtown in Business (DIB), the event was made possible thanks to the support of headline sponsors Liverpool BID Company, MJ Quinn and City of Liverpool College.
Guests were welcomed by Bootle MP Peter Dowd, who praised the “strength and resilience” of Liverpool’s business community and highlighted the importance of strong partnerships between government, local authorities and the private sector.
DIB Group chair and chief executive Frank McKenna then delivered an address on the crucial role that business must play in shaping public policy and driving prosperity.
He argued that politicians and policymakers at every level should work more closely with entrepreneurs, investors and employers to unlock growth and tackle the challenges facing the UK economy.
There was also a contribution from Ryan Wain, director of policy at the Tony Blair Institute. Drawing on Sir Tony Blair’s recent essay on the future of government and economic reform, Ryan explored the need for a more innovative and agile state.
His vision saw the Government embracing technology, modernising public services and building stronger partnerships with business to improve productivity and competitiveness.
Liverpool City Council leader Liam Robinson then outlined the city’s regeneration agenda and the significant opportunities available to investors.
Speaking after the event, Frank McKenna said: “Liverpool is one of the most exciting city regions in the UK. The ambition, confidence and vision on display at this reception demonstrated why the city continues to attract investment, talent and opportunity.

“We were delighted to welcome such an influential audience. The Parliamentary reception forms part of DIB’s ongoing commitment to ensuring that Liverpool’s voice is heard at the highest levels of Government.
“It also creates opportunities for business leaders to engage directly with decision-makers and influencers from across the political spectrum.”
