What is reputed to be the oldest building in Bootle – the Grade II-listed former hunting lodge of Lord Derby – is to go under the hammer at a property auction. Tony McDonough reports
Lord Derby’s former hunting lodge, an 18th century Grade II-listed sandstone cottage in Bootle, is one of 33 lots at the next Smith and Sons auction later this month.
This eight-bedroom property in Merton Road, close to the Strand shopping centre, is reputed to be the oldest building in Bootle. It has recently been sympathetically refurbished and boasts a number of original features.
These include sandstone elevations, exposed beams, fireplaces, stripped floors and moulded ceiling features. It has been rewired and has new kitchen and bathroom fittings, gas central heating. It has a guide price of £340,000 to £360,000.
Smith and Sons said: “The property offers larger than average accommodation offering potential to occupy as single letting rooms, a stunning family home or guest house.”
Birkenhead-based Smith and Sons will hold its online auction on Wednesday, September 25. It includes vacant commercial and residential lots across Merseyside as well as development land, lock up garages and high-yielding investment properties.
There are several commercial opportunities including a large double fronted building on Acrefield Road in Woolton.

Currently occupied as a florist to the ground floor with extensive self-contained and vacant accommodation to the upper floor, the building is suitable for a broad range of uses and is guided at £180,000 to £210,000.
A detached property in Wallasey Village, is a two-storey building comprising a refurbished commercial unit currently trading as a hairdressers together with a self-contained first floor flat guided at £220,000 – £240,000.
