Merseyside Police confirm a 26-year-old man has died after suffering injuries in an ‘incident’ on the site of Everton’s new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock. Tony McDonough reports
A 26-year-year old man has died following an ‘incident’ at the site of Everton’s new stadium at Bramley Moore-Dock.
Emergency services were called to the waterfront construction site around lunchtime today. The man, believed to be a construction worker on the £750m project, was understood to have suffered severe head injuries.
He was rushed to Fazakerley Hospital where he was declared dead a short time later. Other workers on the site were informed of the incident and were asked to stop work and leave.
Health and Safety Executive officials are now on the scene and have begun their investigation into the tragedy. Scientific support vehicles from Merseyside Police were also spotted at the entrance.
In a statement Merseyside Police said: “We can confirm that a man has died following an incident at Bramley Moore Dock this afternoon, Monday 14 August.
“At around 1pm it was reported that a 26-year-old man had been injured and emergency services attended the scene.
“The man was taken to hospital where he was sadly pronounced dead. His next of kin have been informed. Officers remain at the scene as we continue with the early stages of the investigation alongside the Health and Safety Executive.”
On Tuesday the man was named as Michael Jones who lived in Kirkby. Michael was described by his family as “a lifelong blue who will be missed beyond words”.
Everton FC also issued a statement, which said: “Everyone at Everton Football Club is heartbroken by the news a male worker has died following an incident at the Everton Stadium site at Bramley-Moore Dock.
“The thoughts and condolences of everyone connected with Everton are with his family, friends, and colleagues at this unimaginably sad time.
“Stadium Contractor Laing O’Rourke has immediately launched an investigation and will work with the Police and the Health and Safety Executive to establish the full details of the incident.”
Laing O’Rourke has said that work on the site has been suspended.
Last week marked the second anniversary of the start of the project. Once it is completed, Everton will relocate to the new arena from their current home in Goodison Park in 2024 or 2025.
In the next few months the roofing structure on the 52,888-capacity stadium in Liverpool Waters will be finished. This willl make the arena watertight to aid the internal fit-out, which is already well under way in the east and west stands.
