Train operator Merseyrail will increase frequency on the Liverpool to Southport line this summer to handle the surge in day trippers. Tony McDonough reports
Mersey will run a 15-minutes Sunday service on the Liverpool to Southport line this summer.
Starting on Sunday, May 28, trains between the two locations will run every 15 minutes from 10am until the end of service. This is to handle the extra day trippers travelling to and from the coastal town in the summer months.
However, the 15-minute Sunday service will not extend the full length of the route to Hunts Cross. Services between Liverpool Central and Hunts Cross will remain at 30 minutes on Sundays.
Suzanne Grant, commercial director at Merseyrail, said: “Summers nearly here and we know there will be thousands of people eager to get out and about in the sunshine.
“We’re putting on extra Sunday services to make sure people don’t have to wait as long to get out there and sample the best of what our region has to offer.

“Hopefully we will have some lovely weather to enjoy, and Merseyrail will be there to make the day as effortless and enjoyable as possible.”
On Sunday, June 4, essential engineering work will be taking place between Hillside and Southport. Rail replacement buses will be in operation between Hillside station and Southport station, calling at Birkdale station.
