Workers at the Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) factory in Halewood in Merseyside will help build the auto giant’s latest model – the Jaguar Type 01.

This all-electric vehicle is, claims JLR, the “most technically advanced, powerful and aerodynamic Jaguar ever engineered”. In the UK it will come with a hefty price tag of £130,000.

Production will begin in 2027 at JLR’s Solihull operations with Electric Drive Units (EDUs) and battery packs made in Wolverhampton and pressed body panels manufactured in Halewood, Merseyside, where the company employs around 3,500 people.

Unveiled in New York, the Type 01 is a four-door Grand Tourer, with a long bonnet that deliberately harks back to Jaguar’s emblematic 1960s E-Type. Its electric motor will produce about 1,000 horsepower.

This will allow it to accelerate from 0 to 62mph in 3.2 seconds. JLR says it has a range, at “sustained highway speed”, of up to 320 miles. JLR chief executive PB Balaji said: “The unveiling of Type 01 marks the beginning of an exciting new era for Jaguar.

“Combining British heritage, bold creativity, advanced technology and groundbreaking engineering, it reflects our ambition to create objects of desire that will help us invite a new generation of clients into Jaguar’s loyal and passionate customer base.

“Designed, engineered and built in the UK, Jaguar is a copy of nothing and is a vital part of JLR’s growth story, strengthening our House of Brands strategy and supporting long‑term investment in British innovation, manufacturing and skills.”

In 2024 JLR announced a new five-year investment programme worth up to £18bn, with £11.5bn spent so far, moving the business out of the petrol era and producing a new generation of EVs.

This is a risk for the company with many of its traditional customers dedicated “petrol heads”. It came under fire two years ago for an advertising campaign dismissed as too “woke” by many critics.

This launch comes after a troubling period for JLR. In August it blamed “supply constraints and market disruption” for a big fall in sales and profits. Revenues for the three months to June 30 came in at £6bn, 9.6% lower than the same period in 2025.

JLR says this Type 01 “establishes a distinct role for Jaguar” within JLR’s wider portfolio of brands, alongside Range Rover, Defender and Discovery, enabling the brand to address a different segment of the luxury market.
