Liverpool John Lennon Airport smashed passenger records in August

August 2025 was the busiest month in the history of Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LJLA) with more than 616,000 passengers handled during the peak summer period.

It smashes the previous record set only a month ago when July saw the airport handle 576,000 passengers. July and August are always the busiest months of the year due to the school summer holidays.

But this by far is the most successful summer period in LJLA’s 92-year history. August’s figure alone was 12% up on the same month in 2024.

In 2024 LJLA broke through the 5m passengers barrier for the first time in several years thanks to the arrival of Jet2 and Jet2Holidays as well as continued expansion by airlines such as easyJet and Ryanair.

During August, 4,000 flights operated to 73 destinations in 24 countries via Liverpool, with eight of the top 10 busiest routes being to summer sun destinations.

Busiest route, however, was closer to home with Dublin topping the list. Palma, Alicante, Malaga and Faro were the top Mediterranean destinations.

And while the airport handled record passenger numbers last month it wasn’t at the expense of its renowned passenger experience, with 84% of all passengers passing through security in less than 10 minutes and 95%, in less then 15 minutes.

LJLA chief executive John Irving said: “Just last month we broke all previous records and as expected, here we are repeating this achievement, now going over 600,000 monthly passengers for the first time in our 92 year history.

“The growing numbers of passengers choosing to fly from here this summer have been able to take advantage of the convenience of flying from Liverpool, along with our faster, easier, friendlier approach to the passenger experience, enjoying a host of new facilities which opened ahead of the peak summer season too.”
