People looking for careers in maritime or engineering will be able to get access to more than 20 employers and training organisations in September when a major industry jobs fair comes to Wirral. Tony McDonough reports
More than 20 employers and training organisations will be on hand on Wirral for a maritime and engineering jobs fair being held in Wirral in mid-September.
Organised by Wirral Council in partnership with Mersey Maritime, the event will give people the chance to meet employers, discover current and upcoming vacancies, explore apprenticeships and training opportunities, and learn more about career pathways.
It will be held at the Pyramids Shopping Centre in Birkenhead on Wednesday, September, 16, from 11.30am to 2pm. It will include employers, training providers and support organisations from across the maritime and engineering sectors.
This event is part of the council’s ongoing jobs fair programme which is funded by the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, through the city region’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund allocation.
To date, around 4,600 residents have attended previous events, meeting more than 250 employers and training providers – with exit surveys showing that people of gone on to secure hundreds of interviews, training course enrolments, and job starts.
Maritime is worth £9bn to Liverpool city region every year. It comprises more than 30 sub-sectors from shipping to professional services and employs tens of thousands of people. Organisations attending the jobs fair include:

- Marine Specialised Technology
- Star Engineering

- The Engineering College
- Wirral Met College
A free event, the jobs fair is open to everyone, whether they are leaving school or college, looking for an apprenticeship, considering a career change, returning to work or bringing transferable skills from another sector.
Chair of Wirral Council’s Economy, Regeneration and Housing Committee, Cllr Mark Skillicorn, said: “Wirral and wider Liverpool city region has a proud maritime heritage and a world-class engineering sector that continues to create exciting opportunities.
“From global manufacturers and marine operators to innovative engineering firms, employers across the sector are looking for talented people to help shape the future.”
