Low-cost Icelandic carrier PLAY is to launch a new route to Reykjavik from Liverpool Airport, offering ‘seamless’ onward connections to US cities. Tony McDonough reports
A new route between Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LJLA) and Reykjavik in Iceland will offer ‘seamless’ onward connections to North American destinations including New York, Boston, Washington and Orlando.
Icelandic low-cost carrier PLAY will begin flying from LJLA on November 4 every Monday and Friday using its fleet of new Airbus neo family aircraft. Flights to the Icelandic capital will take between two-and-a-half and three hours.
One-way tickets to Iceland will start at £59.99 with flights to transatlantic destinations via Reykjavik from as little as £149.99. Birgir Jónsson, chief executive of PLAY, said: “The UK has always been a particularly important market for us, so to announce a second route within a year of launching is an exciting milestone for the company.
“We look forward to welcoming passengers from the North West region and beyond, to help them on their journey to Iceland or to the US. We are a no-frills airline, but with our reliable and affordable flights, PLAY’s passengers can spend their hard-earned money on their holiday destination, rather than on getting there.”

Paul Winfield, director of aviation development for LJLA, added: “It is fantastic to welcome such an exciting airline brand as PLAY and Reykjavik as a new destination to the airport’s expanding route network.
“Iceland is a destination which we know will prove popular with our passengers, along with the airline’s excellent connections to the US. North America is one of the most popular destinations for North West consumers.
“It is great that passengers from across the region will soon be able to fly from Liverpool direct to Iceland and onward seamlessly to the US, taking advantage of all the benefits of flying from the North West’s faster, easier and friendlier airport of choice.
