Two high-profile Liverpool property projects are ‘highly commended’ in the RICS UK Awards grand final. Tony McDonough reports
Two out of three Liverpool property projects that made it to the national final of the RICS UK Awards were ‘highly commended’ in their respective categories.
In May, Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, The Old Library in Tuebrook and the refurbishment of India Buildings in the city centre were all winners in the RICS Awards in the North West. All three then went on to the national final.
On Friday it was announced The Old Library was highly commended in the Heritage Project category and Clatterbridge Cancer Centre was highly commended in the Public Sector project category.
The Old Library has been restored and re-designed into a multi-use venue for the community following funding from Liverpool City Council and the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
RICS judges said: “This state-of-the-art building was delivered on schedule with impressive sustainability credentials via a team who worked well together throughout, and that included the use of apprentices.
“The innovative design and construction features contribute to an energy efficient and flexible building ready to accommodate the important public services it provides.”
Clatterbridge Cancer Centre is one of the largest networked cancer centres in the UK. It combines world class clinical services, research and academic excellence in Liverpool city centre.
On this project, the judges added: “In summary, the building has been recognised by architectural, construction, engineering and healthcare specialists with the very best facilities both for specific and related needs.”
Winners of the 10 national RICS Awards were:

- Community Benefit Project – The Wilds, Barking Riverside, London
- Environmental Impact Award – St Sidwell’s Point, Exeter
- Heritage Project – Seaton Delaval Hall, Whitley Bay
- Infrastructure Team of the Year – North West Multi Modal Transport Hub Project Team, Northern Ireland
- Outstanding Large Surveying Firm Team – Investors and Insurers Team, Arcadis Lenders
- Outstanding Small Surveying Firm/Team – Modus Construction Consultants Ltd
- Public Sector Project – Erne Campus, South West College, Northern Ireland
- Refurbishment/Revitalisation Project – Buxton Crescent Hotel and Thermal Spa Project, East Midlands
- Residential Project – Perry Barr Regeneration Scheme, West Midlands
