Senior councillors in Liverpool will next week consider a proposal to spend £4m on an upgrade of one of the busiest roads in Anfield.

Walton Breck Road passes alongside Liverpool FC’s world famous Anfield Kop stand. On Tuesday, September 24, the city council cabinet will consider awarding a contract to deliver highway upgrades as part of the wider Anfield Regeneration Programme.

This programme is focused on strengthening the local community through better connectivity, improved public spaces and investment supporting residents and businesses. Walton Breck Road has been identified as a key location.

Under the proposals, a contractor will be appointed to deliver a series of improvements designed to create a safer, more accessible route for everyone who uses the road.

Plans include resurfaced carriageways and footpaths, upgraded pedestrian crossings, and enhanced bus stop facilities. Parking arrangements will also be reviewed in response to feedback from local people.

A final design has been shaped in partnership with Merseytravel, Liverpool FC, emergency services and the community, following a series of consultation events held last year.

Residents’ views have influenced junction layouts, crossing points, matchday traffic management and the timing of construction to minimise disruption.

Although the contract is expected to be awarded following the cabinet decision, the successful company cannot be named immediately for procurement reasons.

Work is scheduled to begin in May, with advance notice provided for any road closures or diversions. The scheme is expected to take seven months to complete.

Cllr Nick Small, Cabinet Member for Growth and Economy, said: “The Anfield Regeneration Programme is an ambitious long-term investment that will deliver real benefits for people living and working in the area.

“Alongside the improvements to Walton Breck Road, we’re developing a range of projects to make better use of local space, attract new businesses and increase the availability of affordable homes.

“We’ve listened closely to residents and businesses throughout this process, and we’re excited to move forward with plans that reflect their priorities and support Anfield’s continued growth.”
