Hotel operator and developer Signature Living has secured charitable status for the homeless shelter is has established in the city centre.

The charity commission for England and Wales has approved an application by the Cotton Street Project to become a charity. It was set up in November 2018 following an initial investment of more than £150,000 by Signature founder Lawrence Kenwright.

It provides beds, clothing, food, medical support and training and educational programmes on the outskirts of Liverpool city centre and has so far helped more than 100 rough sleepers.

Mr Kenwright said:The fact that we have been granted charitable status for Cotton Street validates the work we are doing to help rough sleepers in Liverpool. It also demonstrates that there is a real need for a grassroots up approach to helping those who often have nowhere else to turn.

“The gritty reality of the issues affecting rough sleepers is laid bare at Cotton Street but we are making a difference and are helping people to turn their lives around.”
