Specialist Liverpool city region steel-structure manufacturer Hutchinson Engineering embarks on major expansion of its production capacity as revenues soar almost 50% to more than £30m. Tony McDonough reports
Specialist steel-structure manufacturer Hutchinson Engineering is enjoying one of the most successful periods in its 47-year history, with production expansion and soaring revenues.
Widnes-based Hutchinson was founded in 1979 and today designs and manufactures custom metal parts, steel structures, and heavy machinery components for customers in the telecoms, offshore and onshore wind, oil and gas, rail, nuclear, and energy industries.
In its annual accounts for the 12 months to September 30, 2025, published on Companies House, Hutchinson has reported a 49% rise in revenues to £30.4m and pre-tax profits up to £1.5m from £971,707 in the previous year.
Since the end of that accounting period, the company has continued to prosper. In 2025, it joined the Novel business innovation and leadership programme, led by the University of Liverpool’s Virtual Engineering Centre (VEC) and part of the UK-wide Horizons programme.
Multiple SMEs benefited from the programme, which helped increase productivity by as much as 47% and Hutchinson’s participation is an indication of its ambition to grow and its willingness to consider new ideas.

This summer the business announced it was expanding its manufacturing operations with the acquisition of the former Halton Panelcraft facility. This will add more than 21,000 sq. ft of new production space, taking the total to more than 160,000 sq. ft.
“Combined with the additional production space, this will strengthen our end-to-end manufacturing capabilities, help us respond to growing demand and support a wider range of projects,” the company said.
At the Halton Business Awards in June, Hutchinson picked up three awards – Manufacturer of the Year, Outstanding Business of the Year and the Commitment to Community Award.
This success, the company said, “reflects the breadth of work happening across the company, from major engineering projects and continued investment in manufacturing capability, through to apprenticeships, charity work and support for local causes”.
Steve added: “The manufacturing award reflects the standards our teams work to every day across design, fabrication, production and delivery.
