This Friday members of the team at Vimto maker Nichols will walk 20 miles to the firm’s Merseyside HQ in memory of their late CFO Richard Newman and will raise money for cancer research. Tony McDonough reports
Members of the team at Vimto maker Nichols will walk 20 miles from Manchester to Merseyside this week in memory of former chief financial officer Richard Newman.
Richard died in March this year after “facing cancer with stoicism and grace”. A graduate of Aston University, Richard qualified as an accountant at PwC in Birmingham and then joined chocolate giant Cadbury.
He later worked as finance director at coach operator National Express, packaging firm DS Smith and, before he joined Nichols, was chief financial officer at tissue maker Accrol.
On Friday, June 20, Richard’s colleagues will walk from Manchester to the Nichols headquarters in Newton-le-Willows and will look to raise funds for Cancer Research UK.
Richard was a much-loved and highly respected member of the Nichols team. Remembered for his “warmth, humour and outstanding leadership”, his death has deeply affected everyone at Nichols.
The walk will begin at 9:30am from the Vimto Sculpture on Granby Row, the original home of Nichols and birthplace of the iconic Vimto brand. Joining the walk will be 75 members of the Nichols team plus Richard’s family and friends.
Nichols has already raised more than £13,000 towards its £20,000 fundraising target, and hopes the local community will continue to get involved by donating, spreading the word, or cheering walkers on along the route.
Andrew Milne, chief executive and commercial director Matt Nichols, the great grandson of company founder John Noel Nichols will both be taking part.
Andrew Milne said: “We wanted to do something meaningful to celebrate Richard’s life. He was an integral part of our business and is missed every day. This walk is both a tribute and a way to support vital research that helps others in the same fight.”
