Health club chain David Lloyd Leisure unveils plans for new complex in Wirral Waters to include an outdoor swimming pool and six padel courts, creating up to 100 jobs. Tony McDonough reports

David Lloyd Leisure has unveiled plans to build a new health and fitness club at Wirral Waters in Birkenhead.
Creating up to 100 jobs, this new facility will include indoor and outdoor heated swimming pools, six padel courts, three weather-protected tennis courts, a sports hall with two indoor courts, a gym, a cafe and a children’s play area.
A planning application has been submitted to Wirral Council, with the proposed site located in Peel Waters’ Bidston Dock site off Wallasey Bridge Road.
This will be the latest development in the fast-growing Wirral Waters scheme. In the last few weeks the £130m Millers Bridge scheme, comprising 500 apartments in six blocks, has been completed. A Sainsbury’s Local store is set to open nearby.
As part of David Lloyd’s commitment to be carbon neutral by 2030 the company says the new club at Wirral Waters “will incorporate the latest in sustainability technology”.
In addition to the anticipated 100 jobs once the club is open, the construction phase is expected to support around 60 jobs.
Stuart Caswell, new clubs acquisition director at David Lloyd Leisure, said: “Our plan is to create a state-of-the-art health and wellness club that not only enhances the area and creates a range of new jobs and opportunities for the local community, but also reflects the needs of people living in the area.”

This Wirral Waters project is part of a broader strategy by David Lloyd to accelerate new club openings across the country, with additional sites recently confirmed in Gloucestershire and Buckinghamshire.

Richard Mawdsley, director of development at Wirral Waters, added: “Having a market leading operator like David Lloyd Leisure bringing world-class facilities to Wirral Waters is hugely exciting and a real game-changer for the area.
“David Lloyd’s commitment to sustainability and the jobs they will create for local people also make them an ideal development partner. We have long term plans to create a leisure-led, mixed-use destination in the Bidston area, and this is just the start.”
