A 180-foot high tower crane was constructed over the weekend at Elliot Group’s hotel-led development opposite Queen’s Dock on Liverpool’s southern waterfront.

The crane, boasting a 130-foot-long jib, was erected by Liverpool-based Newry Construction, which has been tasked with completing the 304-room property and neighbouring 56-unit residential block on Norfolk Street in the city’s bustling Baltic neighbourhood.

The new hotel, designed by architects Falconer Chester Hall, will be operated by Liverpool hotelier EPIC Hotels.  The company also runs Elliot Group’s Seel Street Hotel, which opened last December in the city’s Ropewalks.

The hotel is one of three the developer is progressing in the city, having announced plans recently to vary planning applications to include hotel offers at its Aura development, on site in Liverpool’s Knowledge Quarter, and its Park Lane scheme overlooking the Royal Albert Dock.

A fourth hotel, in Gateshead overlooking the site of Tyneside’s new arena and convention centre, was granted planning permission last week. Elliot Group boss Elliot Lawless said: “Cranes are great markers of progress as well as the wider health of a city’s economy and it’s nice to be able to add another to the Liverpool skyline.”
