Low cost airlines Ryanair and easyJet announce a combined total of eight new European routes out of Liverpool John Lennon Airport with extra flights also being added to existing routes. Tony McDonough reports
There will be eight new routes flying out Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LJLA) this winter and next spring following announcements by both Ryanair and easyJet.
Irish carrier Ryanair will offer six new routes to Milan Bergamo, Copenhagen, Gdansk, Porto, Tirana and Warsaw this winter. Rival easyJet has added Spanish destinations Girona and Murcia to its summer 2027 schedule.
Ryanair’s announcement follows its decision to base a sixth aircraft at Liverpool with an aim of growing passenger numbers to more than 2.6m a year.
As part of this latest expansion the airline is adding extra flights on three popular routes out of LJLA to Krakow, Kaunas and Cork.
Ryanair chief marketing officer Dara Brady said: “Ryanair’s continued investment and growth at Liverpool will deliver more than 1 million low sea phases to 27 European destinations, offering customers in the north West more choice at the lowest phase in Europe, well simultaneously driving inbound tourism.
“While Ryanair is growing at Liverpool, other regional airports across the UK are being hamstrung by the idiotic decision to increase Air Passenger Duty.
“If the UK government is serious about delivering growth it should abolish this penal and damaging tax which makes the UK, particularly regional airports, uncompetitive compared to EU countries such as Sweden, Hungary, Slovakia and regional Italy.”
These two new routes from easyJet to Girona and Murcia are part of a UK-wide expansion of its winter schedule.
This will be the first time in easyJet’s history that the airline has operated a route to Girona from the UK, with the launch of flights from Liverpool starting on March 28, 2027, and operating twice a week on Wednesdays and Sundays.
Flights to Murcia will take off a day later on March 29, 2027, with flights departing twice a week on Mondays and Fridays.
