A design competition has been launched to create Liverpool’s smallest roof terrace.

The space in question measures just 3.6m x 2.4m and is located at Queen Insurance Buildings in the city’s commercial district.

Bruntwood, which owns the building, has launched the contest following the completion of major refurbishment works at the adjacent 24 Queen Avenue and is inviting entries from architects, design consultants and students undertaking related courses.

The winner of the competition will have their design fully implemented at the building, where it will remain for at least 12 months.

Colin Sinclair, director of workspace development at Bruntwood, said:

“Queen Insurance Buildings and Queen Avenue have been transformed in recent years to become a hub of independent businesses that offer everything from fine wines and great coffee to digital marketing and meditation.

“With work at 24 Queen Avenue now complete, and the redevelopment of number 16 about to begin, we want the third floor roof terrace to become a small but perfectly-formed homage to the building’s rebirth.

“Ideally, we’d like to see real plants and recycled materials featured, but beyond that there is no prescribed design brief so it’s a great opportunity for established and budding designers to strut their creative stuff.

“The winning design will give the space a quirky and contemporary edge while complementing the aesthetic beauty and history of these wonderful buildings.”
