Free help and advice about keeping warm and staying healthy during the winter will be available at a community event at St George’s Hall, Liverpool.

The Winter Survival Regional Event takes place on Wednesday 9 November (10am-2.30pm) and beings together partners from across the Liverpool city region.

The event, which is part of the Winter Warmth campaign aimed at reducing excess deaths during the winter months, is being coordinated by Liverpool City Council’s healthy homes team and who will be providing information about how to keep warm and safe during the winter months

VIRIDIS, a group of social landlords and local authorities in the city region who work together to reduce fuel poverty and help people to save energy are sponsoring the event.

Around 60 exhibitors will be attending. They include energy companies, charities, council services and community groups. They will provide information and advice on a number of issues including:

• Fuel Poverty
  • Debt
  • Energy efficiency
  • Financial assistance
  • Healthy living
  • Keeping Active
  • Social inclusion

There will be entertainment and demonstrations throughout the day including free bingo sessions and live music from The Grand National Choir.

The Pagoda Centre will give a Tai Chi demonstration, the CHATS (Community Health Ambassador) team will offer free health checks and manicures.

Those attending can learn how to stay healthy from the comfort of their chairs as the Clubbercise team lead some chair based exercise and there will be Zumba for the more active.

A free prize draw will offer some great prizes and a hot drink will be handed out on arrival. Free bags of vegetables to make soup will also be given out while stocks last.

The event will be opened by the Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Roz Gladden.

She said:

“The winter survival event is one of the most important of the year as it shows people the best ways to cope in cold weather. We have been successful in cutting the number of excess deaths in recent years – but last year, in what was a comparatively mild winter, we still had more than 150 in the city.

“So it is important that as many people as possible attend this event so they can get advice and support on staying warm and healthy. Last year we had record numbers and we are hoping to top that this year.”

The event brings together a wide range of agencies and organisations to offer assistance to those who need it most.
