A number of business people have expressed concern about the impact of Brexit but Rahul Kale, Typhoo’s international business director, says the tea firm remains upbeat. Tony McDonough reports

Merseyside tea producer Typhoo says it is positive about Britain’s withdrawal from the EU saying Brexit presents “plenty of opportunities”.

Typhoo employs around 250 people and its factory at Moreton in Wirral produces an amazing 14m teabags every 24 hours and supplies one quarter of the all tea consumed in Britain.

A number of business people have expressed concern about the impact of Brexit on the UK economy but Rahul Kale, Typhoo’s international business director, says the firm remains upbeat.

The firm is a major exporter, selling its products in 30 countries across the world.

“We are selling a British brand and a British lifestyle and there is always going to be a demand for that. Brexit or no Brexit,” said Mr Kale.

“Britain is known for quality, reliability and there’s a lot more we can do. There’s a great future for British businesses. Brexit does not change the game.

“Our largest market is North American, the US and Canada, so trade with them is very important to us.”

Typhoo imports its tea leaves from faraway places such as Kenya and 75% of the leaves come in through the Port of Liverpool. It takes 20 tonnes of leaves to produce 6.9m tea bags.
