Alternative Futures Group shortlisted for Charity of the Year

North West charity Alternative Futures Group (AFG) has been shortlisted in this year’s Charity Times Awards for Charity of the Year.

Every year, Alternative Futures Group, whose head office is in Prescot on Merseyside, helps more than 1100 people with learning disabilities and mental health needs. This is achieved by providing around the clock support within the community, in peoples own homes or in one of eight specialist hospitals.

Neil Campbell, chief executive, Alternative Futures Group said:

“We are delighted to have been shortlisted for what is widely recognised in the sector as a very prestigious award.

“It’s testament to the 2500 people who work here and do such a tremendous job in often challenging circumstances.

“It’s been a fantastic year with so many highlights including a two year partnership programme with Gambian charity Mobee.

“Several of our staff have already been to Gambia where they stay with families in their compounds and during the day help at local hospitals and clinics. They’ve been able to develop new skills and techniques and apply them in practice here, as well as get involved with other initiatives and projects.

“The project provides a first rate opportunity for both organisations to work together and raise awareness of mental health issues in the Gambia and to share best practice.”

AFG is also working in partnership with Community Circles, Dementia Friends and Pure Innovations.

Neil continues:

“Earlier this year we also held a special conference to celebrate the role of the third sector and the part it will play in shaping future policy.

“Rt Hon Andy Burnham MP, The Shadow Secretary for Health, was our keynote speaker and provided a suitable climax to mark 21 years since AFG was set up with founding values of putting people at the heart of everything we do.

“Those values remain and will continue to be our focus in the years ahead.”

The awards take place on the 22nd October at the Lancaster London Hotel.
