Between 1932 and 1982 the Carlton Cinema in Liverpool welcomed countless moviegoers and now the site is to become a £30m residential development. Tony McDonough reports
Developer Sourced Development Group (SDG) has submitted plans for a £30m residential development on the site of a former much-loved cinema.
Opening its doors for the first time in 1932, the Carlton Cinema on the corner of Green Lane and West Derby Road in Tuebrook welcomed countless moviegoers. It closed for the final time in 1982.
For years the building remained derelict and various proposals for the building came and went. On the same block also stood the Coconut Grove, once one of the most popular nightclubs in Liverpool.
It was finally demolished in 2017 and SDG is now proposing to build Carlton Court, a scheme comprising 123 one and two-bedroom apartments. It will also include two bed duplex apartments and mixed-use and co-working retail space.
Communal facilities, for residents sole use, will feature landscaped gardens, parking facilities with dedicated car parking spaces and secure cycle storage.
Clearance works have been carried out on site by SDG, working with Liverpool City Council.
Carlton Court is part of Sourced Development Group’s plans to deliver 3,000 homes across the North West over the next three years. These include the 310-home Kingsway Square Development and 614-home Westminster Park in Liverpool.
