Ogdens Clock Tower in Everton has been converted into an apartment complex by Torus and HMS

Construction firm HMS has completed the £3.1m conversion of the Grade II-listed Ogden’s Clock Tower in Everton into an apartment complex.

Originally completed in 1901, the tower housed the administration offices of the Ogden’s Tobacco factory, which has also been converted to residential use in a £19m project by affordable homes provider Torus.

Designed by Imperial Tobacco’s company architect Henry Hartley, the building now comprises 19 affordable apartments for rent. The new homes were all reserved off plan and residents have started moving in.

In all, Torus has built more than 130 new homes on the 3.4-hectare site for rent and future home ownership.

When HMS first arrived on site in 2017, the historic structure had been disused for almost a decade and was in a poor state of repair. A bespoke and comprehensive approach was required to ensure all works were approached sensitively throughout the 18-month build to conserve valuable historic features and Ogden’s iconic Victorian exterior.

Externally, the original clock faces and sash windows were restored back to their original condition whilst essential structural repairs were carried out. Inside, historic details including the ornate oak paneling, Jacobean staircase and carved timber fireplaces remained firmly under wraps throughout the repair and reconfiguration process.

The HMS mechanical and electrical team installed a suite of 21st century infrastructure – largely hidden from view – providing each home with the best in modern living.

HMS Construction director, John Barrow said: “Bringing important heritage buildings such as Ogden’s back to life is a key part of our fast-growing construction programme, with several more projects currently in planning across Liverpool and the North West.”

Chris Bowen, managing director of development at Torus, added: “It’s fantastic to see the Ogden’s Place development completed. It’s proved vital to the community and this key restoration build is part of Torus’ commitment to quality living for all and respecting the heritage of our communities.”
