Liverpool boxing ‘hero’ recognised at top awards

For more than 30 years Richie Rooney has trained young boxers and created a safe space for youngsters in his Liverpool community – now he has been recognised for his ‘outstanding contribution’. Tony McDonough reports

More than 30 years ago Richie Rooney founded the Croxteth ABC Boxing Club in Liverpool.

Since then he has spent his life promoting the sport in his community, providing a safe space for young people to develop both in the ring and in life.

His commitment to nurturing talent has led to the rise of many boxing champions, and his influence stretches far beyond the gym, with a profound impact on the local community.

At the 2025 Applied Nutrition British Boxing Awards Richie’s magnificent achievement was recognised when he was handed the Community Hero Award for his outstanding contribution to grassroots boxing.

Boxing legend Ricky Hatton and female boxing champion and sports broadcaster Natsha Jonas presented the award to Richie who is the uncle of former Everton, Manchester United and England legend Wayne Rooney.

“He’s dedicated his life to boxing and has helped young boxers achieve their potential. It is great to see Richie recognised like this,” said Natasha.

Ricky Hatton, who also hosted the awards, added: “Richie Rooney is a true community champion. His passion for the sport and his commitment to the next generation of fighters is what makes him a deserving winner of this award.

“He’s been a guiding light for so many young boxers, and the sport owes him a lot.”

Richie Rooney’s legacy as a mentor, coach, and community leader is undeniable. His work at Croxteth ABC Boxing Club has provided opportunities for young people to build confidence, discipline, and resilience, both in the ring and in life.

The Applied Nutrition British Boxing Awards were hosted by former female boxing champion Nicola Adams and Ricky Hatton. Other awards include International Boxing Federation (IBF) heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois, boxing promoter Frank Warren and female welterweight title holder Lauren Price.

Applied Nutrition chief executive, Thomas Ryder, said: “Applied Nutrition has a long track record of working with elite boxing stars. It was fantastic to be part of this inaugural event and celebrate all those working across the sport. Huge congratulations to all of the winners.”
