In May, Joanne Anderson won the Liverpool Mayoral election and now, in a turbulent period for the city, she will address members of the local Institute of Directors. Tony McDonough reports
Liverpool’s newly-elected Mayor Joanne Anderson is to address local business leaders at an Institute of Directors (IoD) event in the city later this month.
In May Ms Anderson saw off a strong challenge from independent candidate Stephen Yip to win the Liverpool Mayoral election. She replaced interim Mayor Wendy Simon who took over after previous Mayor Joe Anderson stood down.
She takes the helm during a troubled period for the council. It faced stinging criticism about its culture and practices in the Max Caller report. Following that report, four Government commissioners have now been appointed to oversee highways, planning, regeneration and property management are expected to be in post until at least 2024.
After securing victory in her election, Mayor Anderson said: “The first thing I want to do is apologise to the city of Liverpool on behalf of the party and administration for the findings of the Caller report.
“It uncovered things that have deeply hurt us all. I have always held an unshakeable sense of justice and this is one of the reasons I stood for this role. I am wholeheartedly determined to put our city on a restorative path after a difficult year.”
On Friday, June 25, between 8.30am and 10.30am, the Mayor will address a breakfast event at ACC Liverpool organised by IoD Liverpool. It will be sponsored by private health business, Kays Medical, and security company, GSTS, and will be organised in line with current COVID-19 restrictions.
IoD Liverpool chair and managing director of recruitment firm, McIver Scott, David Wafer, told LBN: “With the recent bad publicity Liverpool has attracted from the Caller report, the city has made a huge change that signals a fresh start that gives us the chance to take advantage of the opportunities that lie ahead.
“The Liverpool city region was the fastest growing in the country prior to the pandemic and there is no reason to suggest why that can be the case in the near future. I want to understand how Mayor Anderson will support businesses to thrive and how this can improve the social fabric of the city. I have always found her to be straight talking, so it is sure to be a riveting session.”
