Patented new health-tech business hailed as one of UK’s most exciting start-ups

The world’s first company to combine food and drink supplements with technology to allow consumers to track exactly what affect they have on their health has been picked out by Startups.co.uk as one of the UK’s most pioneering new businesses, despite their first product not launching until summer 2016.

Bioepic Ltd. is a tech company that has brought together decades of scientific research into food biology and cutting edge mobile data technology. They hold a worldwide patent as the only company to combine food and drink supplements with apps to demonstrate their benefits, empowering users to measure, track and really understand how what they eat and drink affects their health for the first time.

Their first product, EPIC Sport, has already attracted attention of the health and fitness industry and some of the largest distributors across the world. The key bioactive ingredient in the supplement is epicatechin – a naturally occurring flavanol found in most fruit and vegetables. Epicatechin improves the elasticity of the blood vessels, enabling oxygenated blood to flow more easily around the body when it is needed, such as during exercise. This improves performance, endurance, alertness and recovery using only safe, approved, natural ingredients.

The accompanying EPIC Sport app allows users to take a snapshot of their cardiovascular health using just a standard smartphone camera, seeing both immediate benefits within two hours taking the supplement and chronic improvements over a longer period. Reverse engineered from medical-grade ECG and PPG machines used in hospitals, the technology uses the mobile phone camera to record increased blood flow and oxygen levels in the skin, using either a facial video or finger video to track variations in light reflectance with more accuracy than the green light technology used in most wearable devices.

The health food and fitness supplement industry is worth billions of dollars worldwide, but it is tied up with red tape that restricts the health claims that the companies can and cannot make. Bioepic have come up with a truly innovative solution that puts the consumer back in control to make their own informed decisions, giving them the power to understand their own health and fitness with tangible evidence based on their personal medical data. By securing their patent as the only food or drink supplement that uses mobile technology to measure its effect, Bioepic are in a unique position to transform the health and fitness supplement industry.
