Retail giant included in plans for Clayton Square redevelopment

With Liverpool ONE a buzzing hive of activity and the impending development of luxury city shopping centre MetQuarter and multi-million pound development of “lacklustre” St John’s Market, it’s about time Clayton Square saw some much-needed attention too.

The city centre retail complex is set to receive a complete makeover and plans include supermarket giant Morrisons moving into the former Disney Store.

The scheme comes at a poignant time as the centre celebrates its 25th anniversary this year.

Independent investment, managing property and real estate firm InfraRed commented on the redevelopment plans for Clayton Square by saying:

“The regeneration of this previously struggling shopping centre will transform it into a successful institutional investment in the heart of Liverpool city centre, with support from key retailers including Boots UK and Clas Ohlson.

“World renowned architects Benoy have designed the new scheme, transforming a cluttered two-floor mall scheme with a new triple height single trading mall.  Removal of the internal escalators will provide clear views from Central Station to St Johns Shopping Centre.”

However plans have opened the door to some controversy as Morrisons puts forward an application for a 6am to midnight alcohol licence for its new Liverpool branch.

Merseyside Police and Liverpool Trading Standards are amongst those expressing concerns over street drinking and wider access to alcohol and their links to anti-social behaviour and violent crimes.

What are your thoughts? Do you think the inclusion of a leading retail chain will boost local economy or will its potential alcohol license cause more trouble than it’s worth?
