Spades are in the ground for a new Sainsbury’s store being built next to a 500-home waterside development in Wirral. Tony McDonough reports
Work has started on the construction of a new Sainsbury’s Local store at Wirral Waters.
Being built on the corner of Dock Road and Duke Street, the store is adjacent to the recently-completed £130m Millers Quay residential development which comprises 500 apartments across six high-rise blocks.
It is also within walking distance of residents living at East Float Quay apartments and Redbridge Quay. This 4,300 sq ft outlet will feature a carefully curated selection of Sainsbury’s food and other convenience products.
Open daily between 7am and 11pm, the store will provide bread and pastries baked daily in-store, fruit and veg, meat, fish and ready meals. Other features will include a free cash machine and a collection point for e-commerce orders.
A number of sustainability measures will be included. It will be powered by 100% renewable electricity and will feature 100% LED lighting throughout.
As an extension of the Millers Quay site, students from Wirral Met College will be engaged in the construction. Base Build Services has been appointed as the contractor to build the new store, which is due to open summer 2026.

Richard Mawdsley, director of development at Wirral Waters, said: “Successful brownfield regeneration is about creating places and communities where people want to live, work, and visit and a walkable, high-quality convenience store is a vital part of that offer.
“By working closely with Sainsbury’s, we have also been able to ensure that the store will align with our high standards of sustainability, and that we can involve construction students from Wirral Met College.”
