Brexit commentary from UK Northern Powerhouse

With the nation having spoken on the EU referendum, UK Northern Powerhouse have signalled what impact the brexit vote will have on our local economy.

51.9% of the nation pencilled in a ‘cross’ in the ‘Leave’ column in polling stations the length and breadth of the country, and it has led people to question what this will now mean for their local economy.

Martin Venning, director at UK Northern Powerhouse has commented. He said:

“This morning’s result makes the case for the UK Northern Powerhouse more compelling. Our stakeholders will continue to contribute to the process of building a stronger, more productive and stable Northern economy. The challenges of growth post Brexit will require innovation and new forms of collaboration which can create new opportunities for all. We expect to play our part in shaping that agenda.”

The UK Northern Powerhouse conference is the biggest gathering of Northern businesses in the UK and one of the few to attract delegates from across the entire range sectors, with leading political, academic and business figures from across the North of England present. This year’s inaugural event was attended by the chief executives of the major Northern cities and senior business figures such as Alex Hynes, Managing Director of Northern Rail, and Mark Whitworth, CEO of Peel Ports. Catherine Raines, CEO of UK Trade & Investment, also took part in the event, alongside Lord O’Neill and John Prescott.
