Cammell Laird seeking two finance apprentices
Merseyside shipyard Cammell Laird is seeking two new finance apprentices as it expands its finance department. Tony McDonough reports
Birkenhead shipyard Cammell Laird has taken on two new finance apprentices and is looking for two more.
Cammell Laird is well known for taking engineering apprentices each year with a strong track record of bringing them through to work in full time roles at the site. Now it is looking to expand its finance department.
Finance apprentices at Cammell Laird spend one day a week at Wirral Met College, and the rest gaining hands-on experience within the organisation. Finance director Gemma Swift said: “This is certainly an exciting time for the business.
“Once the recruitment process has been completed, Cammell Laird will have four individuals studying for their Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) at various levels at Wirral Met college, out of 12 roles in total across the department.”
One of the newest finance apprentices is Lewis Nuttall, who is following in the footsteps of numerous family members who have worked at the yard. Lewis was drawn to the role due his strong interest in ships, the maritime sector and his aspiration for a career in finance, describing the opportunity to work at Cammell Laird as a “no-brainer”.
He said: “I chose the apprenticeship because I want to be challenged, working with customers such as the Royal Navy and MoD is an exciting prospect and highlights the challenging nature of the business.
Alexandra Saunders, who has also started her finance apprenticeship, added: “The Cammell Laird apprenticeship programme has given me the flexibility to study whilst working, to enable career progression and to allow me to further support the finance department.”
Applications for the two new roles can be sent to HumanResources@cammell-laird.co.uk and the apprenticeships will start in September 2021.
