David Wafer steps down as chair of Liverpool IoD
Liverpool recruitment firm boss David Wafer steps down as chair of the Liverpool city region Institute of Directors after six years in the role as a ‘passionate and proactive advocate’ for business. Tony McDonough reports

Institute of Directors (IoD) pays tribute to “passionate and proactive advocate” David Wafer who is stepping down as Liverpool city region chair.
David, managing director of Liverpool executive search recruitment firm McIver Scott Consultancy, has held multiple positions with the IoD over eight-and-a-half years including skills lead, vice chair and North West regional chair.
In a statement posted on Linked In, the IoD North West said: “We extend our sincere thanks and appreciation for his outstanding leadership and service to the local business community.
“David has been a passionate and proactive advocate for directors across Liverpool, championing professional development, fostering meaningful connections, and driving forward the values of the IoD. Thank you, David, for your remarkable contribution.”
He took on the role of city region chair in October 2019, just months before the biggest disruption to the economy in generations – the COVID 19 pandemic.
During the pandemic, David advocated fiercely for the necessary support the business community required, locally and nationally. He communicated directly with the Business Secretary and saw some of his suggestions recognised and implemented.
“I guided countless directors to access vital funding during this time, and for many, it was a true lifeline. Meetings at 10 or 11pm or Sunday morning’s trying to channel the tears and anger felt by so many. Months earlier I was in critical care myself,” said David
“I joined the IoD with a clear mission: to amplify the voice of Liverpool city region on a national stage and to champion, support, and advise directors and business owners in our community.
“During that time we have had economic, political and societal earthquakes. From Brexit to COVID and Liz Truss’s economics.
“At times it has been character building. Juggling my different hats, raising a young family and growing a successful and hopefully a well respected executive search and advisory business whilst supporting fellow directors.
“Leading a business can often feel isolating and I aimed to create a community where trusted leaders can find peer support and learn from one another.”

During his time at the IoD, David raised more than £700,000 to help those in need of support. Local events featured Metro Mayors, philanthropists, authors, and leadership experts.
David added: “Business plays a crucial role in shaping our nation’s economic stability and progress. Profit is not a dirty word; it can be a powerful force for good, creating social value for all.
“I encourage each of you to use your platforms for good, just as many of you already do. The need has never felt greater.
“I will continue to collaborate with numerous business leaders across the region, whether it’s sourcing top executive talent or helping to refine business strategies. Thank you for being part of this journey.”
