Developer Romal Capital teams up with Maro to unveil a multi-million pound plan to build 560 apartments at a 19th century dock on Liverpool waterfront along with a farmers’ market. Tony McDonough reports

Romal Capital is teaming up with Maro to bring forward a multi-million pound residential development on Liverpool waterfront.
Brunswick Quay, just south of the city centre, was opened in 1832 and played a major role in Liverpool’s growth as a port in the 19th century. However, the site has sat unused for more than 70 years.
Maro, the site’s original landowner, had gained approval in 2020 for a 552-home scheme, but the development did not progress. There were also previous plans put forward for a 50-storey glass tower.
Now the developers have unveiled their latest vision for the site that will comprise 562 homes across several waterfront buildings along with a new market called the 1832 Farmers Market.
They also plan to off public access to the dock waters, opening up the marina for paddleboarding, recreation, and leisure. There will also be green spaces, walkways and cycle links, cafés, wellness spaces, and active frontages.

“Bringing life back to a dock that helped build Britain’s global trade story is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Greg Malouf, chief executive of Romal Capital.
“Together with Maro, we’re creating something extraordinary on one of the UK’s most iconic waterfronts.”

Romal also has a track record on Liverpool waterfront having delivered a number of residential buildings in Liverpool Waters, north of the Pier Head. So far it has built 370 apartments at the site with another 191 currently under construction.
Greg added: “This is about respecting Liverpool’s incredible history while building a vibrant, sustainable future. Together, we’re creating a neighbourhood that people will love to live in, visit, and be proud of.
“Our approach is rooted in placemaking. From infrastructure to interiors, Romal’s developments are about creating homes with soul and spaces that bring people together.”
