Gaskells takes recycling message into the classroom
Liverpool waste management firm has been going into schools in Anglesey to talk to youngsters about what happens to their waste
Liverpool-based waste management company Gaskells Waste Services has kicked off 2020 off with a tour of schools across North Wales with a series of educational workshops.
During the sessions, representatives from the business spoke to children about recycling and where their waste goes after it leaves their schools.
Gaskells has been working with Anglesey County Council for a number of years after securing its commercial waste contract. The company services all council buildings, including schools, council offices and libraries.
Last year Anglesey became the first county in the UK to be awarded ‘plastic free’ community status by the Surfers Against Sewage. A team from Gaskells is going into schools to see some of the initiatives in place, meet some of the young ECO champions.
To kick off the waste roadshow, Gaskells enlisted the help of its ‘litterbugs’, Rob from the Welsh division and Claire from the PR department, to deliver a presentation at Ysgol Goronwy Owen, and Ysgol Gymuned Moelfre.
Both these schools already have bans on plastic bottles and cans of pop in place and have their own re-usable drinks containers, so the children were very keen to find out how Gaskells dealt with other waste streams
Each presentation so far has been interactive and fun with Rob and Claire showing the children all the different waste streams, how the bin trucks work, the Materials Recycling Facility in Bootle, and also giving them some facts and figures about waste.
Rob and Claire met the Environmental Champions at each school, learned how some of them deal with people dropping litter, and also learned about litterpicks and beach cleans they’ve been on, which Gaskells are hoping to join some of them on in the future.
Gaskells Waste Services was established in Liverpool in 1991, and now offers coverage across Merseyside, Wirral, Cheshire, Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Mid Wales, North Wales and Anglesey.
